HS TENNIS: Players start quest for D2 doubles gold on Friday (2024)

Tennis players get one final chance to reach the PIAA tournament as the postseason moves on to the District 2 Doubles Championships.

Play begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. at Kirby Park and Wilkes University and will continue through the first three rounds. The semifinals and finals are Monday at Kirby Park at 1 p.m.

District 2 singles champions Susan Arp of Abington Heights in Class 3A and Ilana Rosenthal of Wyoming Seminary in Class 2A are not eligible to compete in the doubles tournament.

A pair of teams from the Lackawanna League earned the No. 1 seeds in their respective classifications. Wallenpaupack’s pairing of Erika Badner and Alaiana Burke leads the seeded teams in Class 3A, while Scranton Prep’s combination of Alyssa Wigley and Lily Lengyel is No. 1 in Class 2A.

Badner won a gold medal in doubles last season with her partner, Frankie Toppi. She also advanced to the semifinals of the District 2 Class 3A singles tournament earlier this week.

Wigley and Lengyel team up after first leading Scranton Prep to the District 2 Class 2A team title, then both reached the semifinals in the singles tournament. Wigley and Lengyel each had undefeated seasons in singles in the Lackawanna League.

Six teams were seeded in Class 3A.

In addition to Badner-Burke, Crestwood’s team of Hannah Ziegler and Cameron Carlos is seeded second. Ziegler reached the district final in singles on Tuesday.

Delaware Valley’s pairing of Noelle Holderith and Jessica Willson was seeded third. Holderith also reached the singles semifinals this week.

Valley View sisters Tessa Stafursky and Ally Stafursky is a true doubles team and was seeded fourth. They played at No. 1 singles all season for the Cougars and lost only once in the Lackawanna League schedule.

Abington Heights, the District 2 Class 3A team champion, has the fifth- and sixth-seeded teams. Sona Hanumali and Mary Booth are fifth, while Amishi Amit and Sammy Rosenstein are sixth.

In Class 2A, Montrose’s team of Cara Evans-Paley Adams is seeded second behind the Scranton Prep duo of Wigley-Lengyel. Evans reached the district final against Rosenthal.

Wyoming Seminary’s team of Lizzie Weaver-Kim Li is seeded third, MMI Prep’s duo of Kendall Orozco-Ava Gennetti is fourth, Dallas’ team of Sophia DePolo-Catlin Finn is fifth, Scranton Prep’s team of Emma Cuck-Ella Cohen is sixth, Tunkhannock’s pairing of Molly Keiser-Addy Pineau is seventh, and Wyoming Seminary’s duo of Elisabeth Moules-Addison Priebe is the eighth and final seeded team.
